France Telecom-Orange cable ship abandoned after fire
France Telecom-Orange has announced that one of its cable ships, the Chamarel, has had to be abandoned off the coast of Namibia after a fire broke out late in the afternoon of August 8.The fire was discovered as the Chamarel was returning from a repair operation on the SAT3-SAFE cable off the Namibian coast in the Atlantic Ocean. After attempting to fight the fire, the captain decided to abandon chip, and all 56 crew members left the Chamarel safely. A Namibian fishing vessel recovered the crew, who are now in the Namibian port of Walvis Bay, where they await their return home. The cause of the fire is still unknown. France Telecom-Orange said it will launch an investigation into the matter with the assistance of Namibian authorities as soon as the vessel is recovered."This is a very serious incident, and I would like to express my sincere thanks to the crew members for their courage in managing the situation,” said Thierry Bonhomme, senior executive vice president in charge of Networks and Carriers, and R&D. “The safety of our crew is our primary concern and we will look closely at the results of the investigation. I am also grateful for the support provided by the Namibian authorities."The French service operator says that the incident has had no effect on the operation of submarine cables in the area. The Chamarel is one of six cable ships in France Telecom-Orange’s fleet. The fleet includes four vessels dedicated to maintenance services in the Mediterranean basin, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean; the Chamarel appears to be one of these. Two other vessels are used to lay new telecommunications submarine systems

SaskTel says it will use the infiNET FTTP network to support Internet download speeds of up to 200 Mbps and upload rates of 60 Mbps in its home province of Saskatchewan. The seven-year roll out, which will cost an estimated CAN$670 million, will target the nine largest urban centers in the province: Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford, and Prince Albert. Work has already begun in Regina and Saskatoon. SaskTel expect the network will pass more than 40,000 homes by the end of this year. The service provider the roll out to finish by the end of 2017."By deploying fiber to residences in these communities, SaskTel is not only providing Saskatchewan people with cutting-edge technology, they are also proactively planning for the increased network capacity that the continued unprecedented population growth in Saskatchewan will demand," said Don McMorris, Minister Responsible for SaskTel."We have always been a leader in providing our customers with world-class products and services and we are proud to invest in emerging technology that will enhance our customers' communication experiences today, while also setting the groundwork for technology enhancements in the future," added Ron Styles, SaskTel president and CEO. Arizona ILEC Saddleback deploys Calix E7-20
Scottsdale, AZ-based incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) Saddleback Communications has deployed the E7-20 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) from Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) in a point-to-point Gigabit Ethernet network that serves businesses and residents in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.Saddleback already was a Calix customer, having also deployed the transport systems vendor’s C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP), E7-2 ESAP, and 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) within its 85-sq-mi footprint that combines fiber and copper technologies. Calix says Saddleback has aggressively upgraded its infrastructure over the past dozen years, to the point where the community has gone from no broadband service and only 75% wireline voice coverage to 100% availability of high-speed data and voice services. It now supports over 3,000 residential access lines and serves more than 350 business customers, some of which are either global and national in scope."Our community has blossomed in the past several years, as we have introduced DSL, and then fiber, to the area which has attracted a number of businesses, including spring training baseball stadiums, large corporate offices for national brands, and the local casino," said Shane Gregory, director of operations for Saddleback Communications. "We have partnered with Calix throughout this network transformation, which has helped us keep up with the latest technologies and become more operationally efficient. As we introduce the E7-20 into our network, the platform's flexibility will allow us to roll out a wide variety of new services over fiber, while still giving us capacity to continue to grow well into the future."As it has seen its business customer base grow, Saddleback has responded with a complete network overhaul five years ago, and subsequent extensions of its fiber access network. The deployment of the E7-20 is the latest step in the process, Calix reports. Saddleback also plans to continue to bring point-to-point Gigabit Ethernet into residential areas, the systems house adds.Said John Colvin, Calix senior vice president of North American sales and marketing, "Specialized business services are a huge potential source of revenues for our service provider customers across the country. Companies like Saddleback Communications, who are committed to delivering targeted services and packages for their business subscribers also drive economic development opportunities to their communities by attracting new businesses to the area, while also bringing in these new revenue streams."
